Kailas Yatra (2011)

My daughter and her friend both want to go to Manasarovar/Kailas.They contacted Hyderabad based travel agency and booked for them. I was looking at internet about this difficult trip. They sent the trip plan.

Day01:
1300m
Hyd – Del – Kathmandu by flight.

Hyderabad  (06:30 am ) to Delhi (08:25 am ) Flight no IT801, Delhi (13:25 pm ) to Kathmandu (15:25 pm ) Flight no IT65 ,Pick up from the airport/transfer to hotel. Time permitting, you may want to start exploring the capital city (local guides are available). Visit Pashupatinath temple for evening aarti. In the evening, meet the group for dinner and a trip briefing. Receive your duffle bags, down jacket and sun cap.

Day 02 : 1300m
Kathmandu Sightseeing.

After breakfast, we set out for a guided tour of Kathmandu's holy sites,including Pashupatinath and Boudanath, before heading back to the hotel for lunch. The afternoon is spent making final preparations for the trip. Staff members can assist you in buying or renting any missing gears, and you may check any unnecessary luggage. Group dinner in the evening.

Day 03 : 3750m
Kathmandu to Nyalam.

We embark on our journey at 5:00am, stopping in Dhulikhel (1 hour 30 mins drive) for breakfast or we do start after breakfast from Kathmandu itself. After leaving Dhulikhel, the road follows the valleys of the Sunkosi and Bhotakosi rivers, passing through lush countryside and dramatic cliffs. We reach the Tibet border in the afternoon, then continue on to either Zhangmu (2300m) or Nyalam (3750m), depending on road conditions. Overnight in a local hotel.

Day 04 : 3750m
Nyalam: acclimatization day

This day gives us a chance to relax and acclimatize to the high altitude in Nyalam (3750m). It is important to stay hydrated and extremely aware of your body's physical condition, which the staff will monitor at all times.

Day 05 : 4460m
Nyalam to Saga. Stay in Hotel/lodge.

Past Nyalam (4450m) the road climbs up to La Lung (5124m) then drops down before heading western part of Tibet. The driving is difficult, but the stunning views of the Himalayas, particular Shisha Pangma (8012m), more than make up for the rough travel. By late afternoon we cross the Bhramaputra River and a quick drive brings us to the town of Saga.

Day 06 : 4500m
Saga to Paryang. Stay in Mud house/tents.

Our jeeps and trucks roll through the dramatic valleys following the various rivers through the grazing lands of yaks and sheep. The landscape is highlighted by snowcapped peaks rising out of the distant sand dunes. Many Tibetan nomads and traders in traditional dress inhabit this area.


Day 07 : 4500m
Paryang to Lake Manasarovar. Stay in Mud house/tents.

This is one of the longest driving days of the trip. By late afternoon the drive through the green pastures and massive valleys gives way to the first sighting of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. We will make our way to the small village of Hor Chu on the eastern banks of the holy lake or drive all the way to western banks, Chiu monastery for an overnight stay.
Lake Manasarovar is considered the holiest of all of Tibet's many lakes. According to Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, the four great rivers of the Indian sub-continent (the Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Ganges, and Indus) all flow from its shores. This day offers a wonderful opportunity to visit the great lake and take in the spectacular views of Mount. Gurula Mandhata (7728m) to the south and Kailash to the north. From there we will visit the Trugo monastery before heading to the Chiu monastery for an overnight stay.

In the morning, the Eco Trek staff will set up private bathing tent on the shores of Lake Manasarovar for the traditional sacred bath most pilgrims perform before circumambulating the holy mountain. Once so cleansed, we will head north towards Tarchen, a village considered the base camp for Kailash. We can have an extra day here for a trip to Austapad/Atmalingam/Rishi Cave. Way back we can overlap the day with a few hours additional driving.

Day 10 : 4920m
Parikrama Day1. Trek to Dirapuk(4910m), north of Kailash. Total hiking:15km: 7-8hours.

Our first day of trekking around Kailash begins at Tarpuche. As we make our way along the route we pass numerous chortens (stupas) as well as the sky burial site of the 84 Mahasiddas. We will also take in wonderful views of cascading creeks, streaming waterfalls and the mighty west face of Kailash. We will pass the Chukku monastery and arrive at the Dirapuk monastery about five hours later, where a where we will set up camp for the night.

Day 11 : 4780m
Parikrama Day2. Trek to Zutul Puk. Total hike: 18km:7-8 hours.

The hardest day of the pilgrimage is also the holiest. We will cross a rocky expanse dotted with stone cairns draped with the clothes left as offerings by pilgrims who have come before us, further hiking brings us to the ascent up to Dolma-La pass (5630m). After a nice break at the top of the pass visiting Gaurikunda, one of the holiest sites on the trek will be a reward. Heading down to the steep trail to our eventual campsite at Zutulpuk monastery (4790m), site of the cave of miracles where Milarepa meditated. On this hard trail , way down from Dolma La, we need walk since horse/yaks will not be able to talk us down .

Day 12 : 4550m
Parikram Day3. Trek to end of the valley. 15km 4-5 hours. Drive to Manasarovar.

On the last day of your Kailash parikrama, a three-hour walk brings us to where the river emerges onto the Borkha plain. Our jeeps will be waiting to transport us to our camp at Lake Mansarovar.


Day 13 : 4500m
Drive to Dongba / Saga. Stay in mudhouse/tents. 340km/10 hours driving.

We will rush back towards Kathmandu after living in low-oxygen levels for so many days.

Day 14 : 3750m
Drive to Nyalam. Stay in Lodge.

Sometimes due to season’s rush the traffic is controlled. But if we get early start then we will be in Kathmandu.

Day 15 : 1300m
Arrive in Kathmandu by evening. Stay in Hotel. Farewell banquet.

 24/05/2011
Arriving back at the hotel in Kathmandu, we will celebrate our successful trip with a banquet for all yatris (pilgrims). Overnight in hotel.

Day 16 :
Day for yourself

Transfer to airport & departure. [Kathmandu (16:35 pm) to Delhi (18:00 pm ) IT66 ,Delhi (20:40 pm) to Hyderabad  (22:50 pm ) IT804 ]

Packing List (Yatries needs to bring along with them)
·    A small day pack.
·    Enough clothing for the whole Yatra. Do not over load your bag.
·    First aid kit (our guide also will carry).
·    Any regular medicines that you take
·    Toiletries’ kit (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, towels etc).
·    Water bottle / Thermos/ Flask for hot water (2 liters).
·    Sports shoes & Trekking boots (Good one for walking)
·    Woolen socks (around 4 pairs).
·    Wool/thermal long underwear (comfortable dress for  Parikrama). Note : Ladies should carry a pair of Kurta Surwal / Pants for the Parikrama
·    Underpants (3 or 4).
·    Gloves. Dust mask
·    Sunglasses.
·    Sun lotion cream. Lip guard
·    Nuts, Biscuits, Dry fruits, Powder juice.
·    Rain wear (Umbrella or Raincoat)
·    Torchlight /flashlight / Candle / Matchsticks
Note: Down Jackets and Sleeping bags will be provided by SVM TRAVEL WORLD on returnable basis.

Good Health:
Even though participants do not need to submit any health certificate those with a history of medical problems, particularly cardiac or respiratory, should consult a doctor before deciding to undertake the trip. It is rigorous and challenging trip where all the time spent at high altitudes. At least 2 months regular practice is recommend either 2 hours daily running, swimming, or joining on a health club may help to complete the yatra very successfully. Part 2
